What are some good sources on preforming a good genealogy search on my family.? I am doing research on my family's heritage. I want to learn how to preform a better search. Do you know any good sources? So far, most of the information I have has been given to me by family members, and the wonderful people from this sight. BTW, thanks for all the help. I want to be able to contribute to the search. Thank you Nothing. The way I underststand it, we have just about everything in our hertage. So the info you gave will be VERY helpful. Windy C, That is a wonderful ideal. I can't remember ever having a reunion for my dad's side of the family. I'll have to try and find some of the older members of my family so they can help me track down everyone. How wonderful it would be to meet members of my family I haven't got to meet yet. Thanks for your help.
How do I convert my family tree from a ZED file to a GED COM file? I have been using my heritage family tree builder to put together my family tree and I am wanting to upload this tree to a genealogy website. The my heritage programme saves all family trees into a ZED file format but I need to convert that into a GED COM format so that I can upload it. Any ideas anyone? Thank you
Family genealogy research? I was hoping to do some family research for my grandparents but seem to be having some troubles as an amateur genealogist. As far as I know one group of my family traveled from Ireland (but may have been Scotland) to America and lived in Pennsylvania for a while then moved to Ohio. Another side of the family were native americans four generations back (I've been told Cherokee). Supposedly on my fathers side, they were Vikings (a very very long time ago, obviously). The problem is I don't have the money to join the genealogy websites so what can I do (if anything) to find out more about my heritage? I'd appreciate only serious answers to this question please. Thanks in advance for anyone's help.
do you know any Volciks? (family genealogy research)? I am looking for Volciks,Walciks and any one who has info on the family genealogy. My grand mothers maiden name was walcik which was her emigrant grandfathers Christian name for Volcik. they changed the spelling when the cam to America and I have traced it as far back as Galveston Texas where the family had a few records from their immigration from the czech republic but have no further info. this part of my heritage is the only one I look like, can relate to and would like to better understand so if you can help please do.
Family Genealogy Help Please? My grandma is definitely Native American. Her father's name was John (Johnie) Henry Crowe and Im pretty sure he was born in 1915 or 1916...he married her mom Blondie/Blondy Pauline Hobdy. His father's name was also John (Robert) Crowe and he was born AROUND 1888 but I don't know the exact year..he married a woman named Olivia Simpson or Odie Singleton (same person but listed as 2 different names..?) Here's the tricky part...my grandma is at least 1/5 or 1/6 Native American...if not more...she always assumed they were Crow indian because of the last name but she was never positive.. The only information I could find of John Crowe Sr. and John Crowe Jr. were on census records (which were unreliable because it wasn't an official census website)...and they were both listed as "White" not Indian...so I'm trying to find something that proves they were indian...I don't know John Crowe Sr's fathers name so I can't research it any farther...on the census John Robert Crowe didn't give his parents names...he just put "United States" as where they were from... If you can find anything about the Crowe family (with proof they were related to John(s) and their indian heritage or documentation that shows they are indian or if you can research their ancestry back any farther I would be EXTREMELY grateful! Thank you!!!!! I figured someone would ask how I know my grandma was Indian...for one she told me lol...and you can tell just by looking at her that she is...dark skin...thick coarse long black hair...high cheekbones...pointy nose...and she showed me an old photo of her father (John Henry Crowe) and he looked like he had just walked off of a reservation! So you can definitely tell they both have a good amount of Native American in them.
What is the best genealogy software out there? And please say why you think it is. I'm considering getting a new program. I have Heritage Family Tree Deluxe which I got as a first time program. However I would like something better now. One thing I would like if possible is when creating a web page that it can go past 32 generations. Heritage limits that to just 32. What are some cool features in yours that you enjoy? I was considering RootsMagic because it sounded so good but they dont go beyond the 32 generations in creating a web page. (Anyone know why?) Thanks. Thanks so far to everyone who answered this question, you gave it a lot of thought and details and also pointed out some things to me I hadnt considered. I wish I could give you all 10 points. But since I cant I'm giving my thanks to you now. I can see you all went to a lot of work to answer this. Thanks.
Question about heritage and genealogy. Please help.? My question is, do all surnames lead back to a common heritage/ place of origin regardless of where the ancsetors scatter to. I am confused as to what ties there are between some information that I have found about my last name Gilbert. I have found my Gilbert family dates back to decent from Cornwall England. Also, I have learned that the Gilbert family name is a sept of the Buchanan clan from Scotland. My coat of arms matches that of a website where I learned this information. http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp/s.Gilbert/ Origin.EN/sId.844C425A-CFF2-4B26-9338-7D2378909A8E/qx/coatofarms_details.htm Here is what I think, my direct anscestors are from Cornwall, England. After this, I feel that information is to hard to find about the direct lineage of my heritage after this point except for the origin of the Gilbert's which is from Scotland. Is this a reasonable assumption. well the coat of arms is not mine it is owned by my grandfather I just recognized the same image online
How do I start a genealogy search? I would like to research my heritage and family but I don't know where to begin. I've tried a couple of sites and even though I see possible connections, it's just not there. I would really like to find a free site or ways to research this free if possible. Thanks :)

How do you find genealogy of rare/uncommon names? My last name is very uncommon in the US and most heritage websites don't have it listed. I've always been pretty interested in learning where my family came from and what my name means, but I have yet to find anything about it, anywhere. If it helps, it's a German or Polish name, we're not even really sure which. We're almost positive the spelling of it was changed when my ancestors immigrated to America.
How do I figure out my ancestors and genealogy? I go to Ancestry.com but it costs money and my parents dont really care much about this. But anyway where can I make a family tree for free on a website that really works and gives you facts about your heritage. Also I figured out a name of an interesting relative I have but I dont know where I can look up his parents, spouse, and children???? Please help. Thanks
How far back have you been able to research your family history? Those outside America, if you don't mind list what country you are from. Many Americans are very interested in their family genealogy and have done extensive research. Our heritages take us back to Germany, England, Ireland, Italy, Africa and other countries. Some of us are able to trace back to the 1600s. I wondered how many years back you or someone in your family has documented your history. Are there any interesting family members? This question is for all, but I am really curious about those that are not American citizens and live in other countries. How many years back your research took you. Actually, Nicholas my question states it is for all to answer. :)
How can i find my families Genealogy (Dunlap)...? Well actually i'm looking to find my families Genealogy which has been very difficult considering my mother was adopted at birth..and well..all she knows of her mother is her mothers real name thanks to a birth certificate (by the way my mother was born in Salzburg Austria). My father too was adopted when he was younger (he is from Cleveland, Ohio) however he knew his fathers last name was Deener (he is from Cleveland, Ohio). Once he got adopted his last name Changed to Dunlap. So considering Dunlap is my adoptive last name... i'm curious about finding my true heritage. Considering i am of mixed race i'm interested in finding out what it is i'm exactly mixed with. My mother is From Salzburg Austria, her last name is Löcker
Did Italians serve in the Spanish Armada? I am not very familiar with this topic, but I am very interested in genealogy and curious. Most of my family is big on heritage. My great-great-great grandmother had an Italian maiden name. She always said that during the Spanish Armada some Italian ancestors had a part in this, and they eventually made their way to England. Thank you! :) Thanks for that. The name was "Plexico". I never thought it sounded very Italian, but I could be wrong. Is it? Plexica and other spelling/pronunciation variations as well.
Should I tell my mom what I found out on a Genealogy website? I'm doing a project related to my family's genealogy. Not much is known about my mom's dad's birth parents, but it is generally accepted in my family that his birth mother was French, but no one talks about the birth dad, or his heritage. I've done research and he might have been German or Jewish based on his last name, and whether its spelled on way or another. I'm excited about this find, but I kind of don't want to spring a brand new heritage on my mom. Do I tell her and change everything she's known about a quarter of her heritage, or do I keep this interesting fact to myself?
Celtic/Gaelic/Confusion - a question about heritage...? I'm somewhat a newbie at genealogy/family history, and I have some basic cultural questions to ask. My maiden name is Colbath, which I've been told is Ulster-Scot. It comes from Galbraith (lowland Scots, I believe). Also, my grandmother's maiden name is Kinney, which I'm fairly certain is Irish, with the "Mc" dropped. An online source leads me to belive this name also comes from Ulster. I'm having a great deal of trouble researching the Kinneys, so I really have no clue. Are either of these names Celtic and/or Gaelic? Also, I am unclear of the differences between the Celtic and Gaelic peoples. Can someone break this down a bit for me, please? Please only answer if you have experience in this area... Thank you in advance! ^_^ Surnames on my father's side: Colbath, Carson, Banner Surnames on my mother's side: Wells, Kinney, Austin, Striedel (German)
Meeting long lost relatives? I've been doing a genealogy search on my family's heritage for about two years now. Last year I found some of my relatives in Arizona. We shared information back and forth during that time. A couple of days ago, I received an invitation to come and visit them. We are thinking about taking out vacation next year to visit them. Has anything ever happened to you like this? Did you go and visit them? If so, would you do it agan?
What is the purpose behind genealogy? What is YOUR reason for an interest in genealogy? Perhaps you're just a good-hearted person who enjoys research, history, and helping others. I love genealogy, having gotten into it only in the past year or so. I do get frustrated when I hit repeated brick walls in my research, but I have to admit that the payoff for a breakthrough is worth all of the hours of digging. Why is genealogy and knowing family history so important to us as a species though? My grandmother was adopted but didn't learn of it until late in life. She was apparently so angry at the discovery that she didn't care to search for her true parents' identity. Her children (my aunts, uncles, and father) have shown a similar disinterest in finding out about her ancestry. I, on the other hand, am to the breaking point over finally getting her original birth certificate and then finding out the information is possibly/likely falsified by the mother anyways. As a result, I've sat back recently and wondered why some of us are so driven to learn about our roots. It doesn't really affect who we are on a day-to-day basis. When I'm being stubborn (for example), it's a major cop-out to say, "Well, I'm German. We're stubborn!". I'm not personally German. My last German ancestor came to America over 130 years ago. If we don't take on character/personality traits based on our heritage, why do we dig so deeply for a family tree? I'm just curious what others think. There are a lot of skilled genealogists here who surely have some great input.
Is it normal to love your city even if it's not world renowned.? I live in Fort Worth, Texas and I love it here. I was born here and this is where my family lives. It has that Western Cowboy heritage but is now a moder city with skyscrapers in its downtown. Even though it might be overshadowed by Dallas, I still love it here. It isn't that special and a lot of people don't like it here. So is it normal to love your city for the fact of its history, heritage, genealogy, and the place that gave you life? Or am I just overly biased?
Facial features, heritage, physical features? I am researching my family's genealogy, english, irish, german, french and dutch & possibly american indian. As I go through old pictures I find people who look similar to me in certain aspects. I am interested in learning about common inherited features from certain groups of people - for instance, my mother used to tell me that I have an "english jaw", I've also been told I look like I have american indian blood. I also have "shovel-teeth" and high nerve sensitivity in my mouth, which is also said to be an american indian trait. Is there a website that lists common shared traits amoung peoples such as these? I have not found one. bomullock: interesting info, I'll have to read a bit more about that.
Easiest way to track non-American genealogy? I have always been interested in my heritage and family tree and can only make it to my great-great-grandparents. I'm 4th generation American and unfortunately my roots go back to Poland (father's side) and then Naples, Sicily, Venezuela and Brazil on my mother's side. What is the best means of obtaining any form of records of my ancestors without having to actually go to the cities they came from? Ancestry.com seems only best for English/Irish/American ancestry but it seems nearly impossible for anyone coming from the wave of immigration during the early 20th century. Any ideas? Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Is your ethnic heritage important to you and if so, why? Yahoo! Canada Answers Staff note: This is the real Scott Thompson! Catch Scott on the CBC's genealogy program Who Do You Think You Are? (http://www.cbc.ca/whodoyouthinkyouare/?.ca) on Thursday, December 6, where he will be researching his roots. Along the way, he debunks a treasured family myth, uncovers a family scandal in Ontario and travels to a small village in the UK to learn about an ancestor's tragic circumstance.
Where do I go from here? (Native American genealogy)? Okay, so my family is trying to prove our Indian heritage (no, we are not just in it for the benefits) and we need some help. My great-grandma is a Cherokee whose maiden name is Barrett. We checked the Dawes rolls and found 20 results for that last name. Now what we need to do is see if my Grandma is related to them in any way. What's the best way to go about it? There are a lot of genealogy sites out there, but which one is the best and easiest to use? Wado!
Keloid scar - genealogy? My late grandfather had a round lump about 1cm diameter on the back of one of his earlobes. I was always a bit freaked out by it and scared to ask what it was, but I have since learned it may have been a keloid scar. I've heard that keloid scarring is more common in people of African, and other non-white origins. My grandfather was white, but had quite dark skin, and I'm not sure about his ancestral heritage. Could the presence of this scar mean that my grandad had African blood somewhere in his family? Does it work like that? Any statistics that might be relevant? I'm really interested in genealogy but haven't studied actual genes etc since school, so forgive me if I sound like an idiot! Interested to read other people's input. Thanks.
I'm looking for a good Genealogy site that might be free/cheap..? I've got an extensive family history that no one else has bothered to take the time to evaluate. Recently I ran into an individual with the same last name as mine, and he said he traced his heritage back to 1570A.D., but I can't remember for the life of me what the web-site name was. He did say that it was free though. Anyone got a clue?!!
Has anyone ever heard of this strange Norwegian reference? Whenever someone in my mom's family growing up would develop a stye (eyelid inflammation), my grandpa would always say that was Norwegian heritage at work. He would say the same about a hairy back too, actually. Is this just a joke, or has anyone ever heard anything else? Nothing important really, but I thought if anyone would know if this comment was/is commonplace, it would be the Y! Answers community. I've worked hard to piece together my family genealogy, and there is no direct Norwegian that I've found. I wonder though if there's a reason why he would have said it? Or like I said, maybe he was just being funny and picking on Norwegians for whatever reason.
Is Barack Obama really the first African - American president? He is not African - American which means someone with slavery descent but don't know exactly which country so they say African - American. He is Kenyan - American because he knows his fathers African side (Kenyan) and he is American because he was born in America. He is also biracial the first biracial 50/50 president, the first African American presidents passed already like..... Vaughn's research shows Jefferson was not the only former black U.S. president. Who were the others? Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. But why was this unknown? How were they elected president? All five of these presidents never acknowledged their black ancestry. Jefferson, who served two terms between 1801 and 1809, was described as the "son of a half-breed Indian squaw and a Virginia mulatto father," as stated in Vaughn's findings. Jefferson also was said to have destroyed all documentation attached to his mother, even going to extremes to seize letters written by his mother to other people. President Andrew Jackson, the nation's seventh president, was in office between 1829 and 1837. Vaughn cites an article written in The Virginia Magazine of History that Jackson was the son of an Irish woman who married a black man. The magazine also stated that Jackson's oldest brother had been sold as a slave. Lincoln, the nation's 16th president, served between 1861 and 1865. Lincoln was said to have been the illegitimate son of an African man, according to Leroy's findings. Lincoln had very dark skin and coarse hair and his mother allegedly came from an Ethiopian tribe. His heritage fueled so much controversy that Lincoln was nicknamed "Abraham Africanus the First" by his opponents. President Warren Harding, the 29th president, in office between 1921 and 1923, apparently never denied his ancestry. According to Vaughn, William Chancellor, a professor of economics and politics at Wooster College in Ohio, wrote a book on the Harding family genealogy. Evidently, Harding had black ancestors between both sets of parents. Chancellor also said that Harding attended Iberia College, a school founded to educate fugitive slaves. DO YOU AGREE? Barack Obama is the first BIRACIAL 50/50 president but not African - American president like the ones above? I am Sudanese - American not African - American, Barack is Kenyan - American not African - American because we both know where our ancestors come from Africa is a continent not a country so since you don't know exactly which nation y'all come from you people say African - American, but since we do we're Sudanese - American/Kenyan - American. Do you understand now?
Finding genealogy? My father's 50th birthday is coming up. This is a man who makes a good living, has everything he needs, and doesn't want anything else. The most important thing to him is his family. Really, the best father in the world. He has 3 adult children (I'm the youngest, and I'm 20), and one adopted baby boy with my step mother (he is now 3). We are a pretty large Italian family, his father (my grandfather) passed away 2 years ago, but was 1 or 9 children. Needless to say, there are people in our family that I have never heard of. For his birthday gift from my siblings and I , I thought of doing some research and getting a complete family tree made and framed to give to him on his birthday. However, I do not even know where to start. I know some of the heritage websites only give information on who has registered, etc. So who do I need to speak to or pay to get my research of my family started??
Genealogy-Confused on what to research? I am sorry if this question is a little on the long side. I have recently started to research my family tree and I am confused on which side of my family I should be researching. I was born in Mexico but I was raised in the United States, my father was half White and half Hispanic, born and raised in California. My mother is fully Hispanic and was born and raised in Mexico. I have family on both side's, how would I go about researching my family tree? I would also like to know if there were any Coat of Arms or something similar to that originating from a Hispanic heritage. Thank you for all your help. Thank you for the quick response, but I am still confused as to what side of the family I should trace. do I loo both up? and which do I claim as my own?
heritage of great grandmothers' last name? I'm going to put spaces in her surname so my family can't find that I'm trying to trace our genealogy. They're really iffy about it and I feel like I'm missing a big part of myself by not knowing. My great grandmother died a few years ago, I never knew her and I can never get a straight answer out of anyone in my family as to what tribe she belonged to because she was "supposedly" 100% native american. Her last name is "B a r c h i e" Also can you guys please help me find where "B u d l o n g", Morales, Baggesen and Medina come from?
Screwy Genealogy? My family history is not easily traceable (impossible from what I can see without shelling out serious money that I already DON'T have) and I'm curious as to my cultural heritage. My face shape has gotten a lot of the same questions, but I was wondering if anyone who was good at this could give me a good guestimate as to my heritage. My natural hair color was a dark-red, almost brown when I was born and then fell out and grew in white. It darkened over the years and is now, to use a celebrity who's pic is easily accessed for comparison, almost exactly the same shade as David Nykl's hair with some naturally lighter highlights. As for the face shape, it's in these pics: http://s114.photobucket.com/albums/n244/amandamarielynn/Me/ I wouldn't rely on the hair color in those (except MAYBE the ones with my hair across my face, but those are touchy because I put black in the underside of my hair) because I processed my hair a LOT in those times. It doesn't have to be scientific, thanks. Thank you. The main reason I was confused, is the fact that Germans and Swedes are supposedly tall people. And while I'm between 5'3" and 5'4", I'm the tallest one. My mom's not even 5'. She's only 4'10", lol. I just figured there was something else in there:-) Does it help if I say that I tend to burn quickly and severely, but then it slightly tans rather than goes back? PPS- This IS an adoptive situation. Not me, but my great-great grandmother stowed away to the US at a young age and learned English through listening. To her dying day, no one ever figured out what language she was speaking as translators claimed it seemed to be a cross between a Scandanavian language and an Eastern European language (as in the From Romania to East Germany, to Croatian, to yada yada yada). It didn't make sense to anyone. To describe her, she had light brown hair, high cheekbones, greenish eyes was in the 5'8" range (okay, I'm not the tallest, thinking of it) and carried herself in a specific manner that I can't really describe. She had that walk until she died when she was in her 90s (I was 9) Oh, and thin noses. My whole family has them.
Ideas for help with my genealogy.? I am trying to find more information on my family. All of my grandparents passed on when I was young for this side of the family so I have had to dig for information and it has been a long process. I know it takes time but I have come to a stand still with my search. Does anyone know any good sites that are free (putting myself through school and don't have extra money) that I can use? I live in the United States. i have used the standard sites....my heritage, ancestry, rootsweb, ect. but i can't seem to find anymore information. Please help
AP's do you at times forget that your adopted children's genealogy, ethnicity, history is not yours? My wife was looking for summer shirts for our son and she found some children size Guayabera. She made the comment, because I am part Puerto Rican, that he would be getting in touch with his roots. I said no he isn’t because as far as we know there is no Hispanic in his natural family. (There could be we honestly have no idea but I don’t think it is likely ) She honestly forgot she just feels like he is part of us and our heritage even though he has his own, even though we have no idea what it is. We adopted him from foster care we never met the mother and father was in jail. We have no medical or other history for him, race is obvious but ethnicity is another story.
How can we be sure the Jews are indeed Jews? If the genealogies were destroyed at or around 70 AD, how can we know that the current people occupying Israel are indeed Jews? Is there any way (evidencially or logically) to prove they are indeed Jews? Or must we simply believe that each family maintained their identity and heritage through 1900 years? BTW, there is no agenda here, though this may sound like I'm trying to disprove their claim. I AM NOT. I believe they are Jews... but I need good reason to believe so. TY.
What do you think of my story? Well, I was bored and I wrote this. Is there anything I can fix or improve on? What do you think about it (i don't mind harsh criticism)? Also, is this plot overwritten and are the characters flat? thanks I looked down the steep incline of the hill, and started to breathe faster. “You sure this is safe?” I questioned. “Of course, silly. The worst case was some dude got into a coma,” teased my best friend Blade. “And besides, Alex only got a scratch”. “But I don’t even know how to skateboard! I can barely even surf...” “You’ll be fine, Griff.” I got on my brother’s worn out skateboard and as I was about to chicken out, I felt a push and down I went to my death. Ok, that was a bit dramatic but nevertheless, I saw my life flash before my eyes. As neared the bottom of ‘Death Hill’, I felt Alex seize the back of my sweatshirt and pull me off. “You good?” she asked. “Never again,” I gasped. I heard Blades laugh echoing. I whirled around and yelled every cuss word I knew at him and that I was going to rip his heart out. He ran down the hill in around two seconds and gave me a grin. We hung around for a few minutes, and then heard the police sirens. “Some rich person probably called in that we were disturbing the peace,” grumbled Alex. “Whatever, let’s go,” I said leaving only a crumpled peace of paper that said “Better Luck Next Time.” We knew we would eventually get caught and hauled off to prison, but that was our life. Hanging out together, avoiding the cops, and trying to survive. “Where do you wanna go now?” asked Blade. Alex shrugged and turned to me. “Where are we ALLOWED is the better question… Aren’t getting a new tattoo today?” Blake got up and stretched. “Yah, going for a full sleeve this time. Do you guys want to come?” “I’m game,” said Alex, “what about you?” “Sure –” I was cut off by the cry of an eagle. Ugh, busted. “Never mind,” I said. “Huh, thought we ditched your brother down by the gas station.” He waved to the bald eagle perched on the oak. “He’s fast.” “Tell me about it” I mumbled. “See you tomorrow.” My friends said their farewells and I was left with my brother staring at me. You see, we are all shifters. Depending on our personality, heritage, and genealogy, we could change into a tiger or a mouse. My brother changed into his human form and started firing off questions and yelling that I needed to get some more responsibility. I knew I shouldn’t make him mad like this. He had sacrificed everything for us because of my parents. My parents left me and my 9 brothers to fend for ourselves. They had left us for one sole reason. Me. At four years of age, I was too curious for my own good. I had reached into the fire place that we had and completely burned my hands. When a shifter is faced with either a huge turning point in their life or a huge change, we can start to shift. Right then and there, I shifted into a wolf pup. There had not been a wolf or a vampire bat in the world for 5 centuries for certain reasons… (Werewolves Vampires, people with overactive imaginations) “Are you even listening?” asked my brother in a tired voice. “Yah, sorry. Are we okay?” “Sure,” One good thing about my brother, he always forgives me, no matter what. “Let’s go.” He turned back into an eagle and flew off. I waited a few seconds and wondered if my family would be better off if I ran the other way. If I wasn’t able to shift, maybe our life would be better. Then I shook my head and ran after him, with all four paws on the ground.
Does Black History month, Martin Luther King day & Cinco de Mayo promote biogotry? In studying my family's genealogy, I found several distinction in the Scot/Irish ancestry. There is the classic the orange or the green, Northern Irish vs, well, all other Irish, and both have clans with special mottos and allies. Some Clans have taken in other clan(s) while on some large Clans, (like Campbell) there can be many different branches of the same name. Except for the immigrant discrimination (esp. against the Irish), these various groups have all melted into US Citizens. There is little to no division anymore, and many desire such a heritage! Now my point ot it all: There are literally no Irish/Scottish holidays. I know everyone points to St. Patricks day, but really this is not a holiday of heritage. It is an excuse to drink green beer and parade if you feel the urge. Without any group, (like the NAACP), these two cultures have made a great difference in American heritage. I think it is time to change black and hispanic issues into citizen issues. What do you think?
Can I prove that I am Cherokee Indian? I have always been told that I am Cherokee on both sides of my family and even have a picture of a great grandmother who is OBVIOUSLY indian. My parents/grandparents told me that they do not believe that anyone was registered. I have had no luck on the Dawes Roll, but have only just started doing research. Ancestry.com has been help filling in the names of family members that my mother didn't know, but I am still not finding names on the official roll. Can anyone tell me if there is a better way to go about this process? For the critics...I am in NO way wanting to gain anything from this information besides learning more about my heritage. I already have 2 college degrees and don't plan to start another, therefore this information won't help me on a college admission application! :) Basically, I lost my mother 2 years ago and am just interested in taking over where she left off with the genealogy of our family. I am proud that I am of American Indian decent (which is pretty obvious when you look at me) and want to know as much about my family's history as possible! Thank you for any help. It will be appreciated! If there isn't a way to find out if I am "officially" an American Indian I will just have to be proud of the picture of my great grandmother...she looks like she was one cool lady! :)
Help Editing Paper? My Heritage Once a person reaches a certain age it is almost 2nd nature to ask where did their family come from? Tracing your own genealogy is like going on trip, and you may find many interesting things about your family along the way. Your relatives could have very well come from different and far away countries but in the end they make up the person who you are now. Now that I know a little more of my own history I would like to tell their journey in seek of the American dream. First it starts out with Ole Dybing who arrived in the US from Norway in 1886 at age 22. Most likely he traveled to Minnesota from New York by train to his uncle’s farm in Houston MN by train. He left Norway for economic reasons and also to help his uncle on the farm. He married Ellen Kalvestrand who arrived with her parents in 1869 at the age 5. Perhaps they traveled by train to Viroqua, Wisconsin where she grew up on the farm The family emigrated for economic reasons. On the Gydal side of the family T
What kind of names might suit me? I'm a nursing student [almost finished btw] with career goal of working in the Labour & Delivery or NICU ward. My heritage is widespread and I've researched my family tree extensively because I'm interested in genealogy as a hobby. I'm British, Scots, Welsh, Irish, Romanian, Czech, Austrian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and German. Looks are I'm very pale with light brown hair naturally [right now it is coloured blonde] and eyes that alternate between green, gray, and blue depending on lighting and what I wear that day. I have just a smidgen of freckles. What names can you think of that suit me? I hate 'normal' names [because I'm not your average lass], yet I don't want anything ghetto like Shaniqua.
Where can I find out more about the Cree Nation/Algonquin Language online? Family stories have always said that we had Cherokee blood. Genealogy has been pretty fruitless. I bought the books that had prints of the Dawes Roll, the Baker Roll. Recently, I had my DNA taken and I pull up majority Central Asia, and Alaska Indian, more defined lately have gone to Cree Indian. I have a sense of wanting to belong where I am lead. I don't care about taking advantage of the system for education, etc. That ship's sailed. My calling is to belong to my tribe and be active to make some positive contributions with my time and energy, as well as teaching my children a valuable part of their heritage. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of this. Thank you in advance for your time.

AP is adoptive parents meant to put this in adoption. Oh well you guys can answer also I am a little jaded from hanging out in the adoption section on YA. There is a hole nother thought on adoption over there. Kind of the flip side to the coin. I think it is great that she sees him like that. I do also but I don't want him to loose what he had but without knowing what it was I can't give that to him.
