How do I trace my family tree? In many cases, researchers need to know the name of an ancestor in the 1800s or that crossed over to america or something. I can't do it that way. I need to be able to trace my tree from recent names. I know my great grandmother and great grandfather's names, and all the ones that came after them, but I don't know how to go back any further. How can I research my family tree using what I know, and somewhat recent records?
Can any one give me a good website where I can safely trace my family tree without having to pay or something? Alright, so far I can trace my family tree on my father's side back to 1791, when a great-great-great-great(?) grandfather was born. He became the Postmaster General of County Kerry. I'd like to figure out more about my ancestors, but I don't want to pay for it or to have to give personal info or stuff like that. Thanks all who give good answers! The Postmaster General's name was Dennis Thomas Downing.

How do I trace my family tree without spending a lot of money? I've been trying to trace my family back through the years but it seems there is cost at every turn & like most people these days I don't have money to spare. My family name is really common so when I do searches on websites lots of results come up but you have to pay to look at the results & they might not even be about the person you want. For example when I tried to look up my Grandfathers service record from WW1 nearly 700 results came up & they wanted me to pay £85(sterling) to look at them. I also don't really have the money to travel to around the country & when I tried to contact the priest's of my ancestors parish's I either can't find anyway of contacting them or they are completely unhelpful. The last priest I spoke to told me that the church records were private & that he didn't want anyone coming to his house! I'm more than at little frustrated at this point. Can anyone gimme some pointers PLEASE?

And when I get the information from them should I go to a family tree website? Please help me I am so confused!

Help tracing family tree back to Ireland!??!!? Ive been helping my grandad trace our family tree for several years now and we have got completely stuck! Our ancestor 'James Curtis' was born in Ireland in 1821; we know this from the 1851 census where he is living with his wife agnes (b.1828) and his children (agnes b.1853, james b.1855, jane b.1860, mary b.1857 thomas b.1850 peter b.1864 margaret b.1866). From his marriage certificate (he was married in south shields) we know that his father was called peter and was also born in ireland. Is there any way we can trace our family back any further without knowing in which county in Ireland he was born? Is there any way of finding out this information. They were a relatively poor family (he was a chemical labourer) and the grave where he was buried is unmarked. We have no information as to when he travelled and settled in the UK, although we know his wife was scottish! Sorry for the information overload! We have been working on this project for so long and are frustrated as to being so stuck!! Any help much appreciated!

Teachers: Have you ever assigned a family tree project? I normally hang out in the genealogy section, where we get dozens of questions from panicking students who’ve been required to trace their family tree for a school project. They’re often asked to find out where their ancestors came from, or to describe their ancestor’s immigration experience. That’s a wonderful project for someone who can talk to parents or grandparents about their immigration experience. But what about students whose ancestors have been here for 100+ years? It can take years of extensive (and expensive) research to find that type of information. Even going back a couple generations can take months; and that’s assuming you have the money and the know-how to do it. So I’m wondering… are the teachers who assign these projects not aware of what’s involved in genealogical research? Or are the students misunderstanding the assignment? Are they given other options, if finding their family origins isn’t feasible? I love to see kids become interested in family history, but I feel bad for these students. They’re under the impression that they can click on a website and find their family tree, but it just doesn't work that way.
Does anyone know someone with the surname 'Dear' that lives in Arbroath or St.Vigeans in Scotland? I'm trying to trace my family tree and have ancestors that trace back to these towns. I'm from England, but have family that currently live in Ayr and also Alyth in Perthshire.
Tracing Ancestors? Everywhere you look, television, internet sites etc you are being encouraged to trace your family tree. Is it only me or do others wonder the accuracy of this? It has always been a fact of life secret affairs have taken place and in history if a name was put down as a child's father that was it. However, there must be numerous cases that can never be proven that ancestors traced are just a joke.
Help with family tree? I have recently started tracing my family tree but have unfortunately only got as far as my great grandparents. As my family were originally form Wales I am finding it hard to trace them. I have the information if anyone would like it. My Great Grandparents names were Thomas Baughan and Martha Davies(maiden name), before they married. I will add extra info if it is needed. Finally, do you know any good welsh ancestor sites which are free, I have tried many but had no luck. Thanks
How do you get a free list of all the people on your family tree? My sister traced our family back to, well a long enough distance to tell that our ancestor was the first black woman in Knott co. I am a white guy and as far as I know I've never had any black people in my family. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I'm just saying I want to know everybody as far as 150-200 years ago. Is there anywhere to do this at online for free? Thank you.

Does it piss you off to know your ancestors were slaves but not exactly who they were? It just makes me mad to not really know much of anything about my ancestors. I'm African American and a little Native American from two tribes (Cherokee and Blackfoot) but I do not know anything else. Rumor in my family is that I have a great grandfather who was white and owned a plantation, meaning that he must have slept with one of his slaves to create a family member. Remember, Native Americans were enslaved as well as Africans. I've observed that it's a lot easier for caucasians to trace their ancestors than it is for blacks. I'm guessing because we were enslaved and uneducated? And didn't know what a family tree was just knew that a tree had more freedom in those times. So yeah, it's really aggravating. I'd like to trace my family tree but simply cannot. I can't ask my family becasue a lot of them died out (In those times lynchings and such went on, so survival wasn't easy) What are your view on this???? Why do you think it is that a lot of blacks can't trace their ancestors but it is much easier for whites to do so? And no I'm not racist, actually my boyfriend who's white, is pretty pissed about it too and is just as curious as I am.
Do ancestry/family tree websites work for people from other countries? Do these website only trace your lineage back to the first ancestor who came to America? Is there a website that can get into other countries' databases too?
How do I trace ancestors if we think they might have been gypsies? My dad's Grandma said something to my dad when he was little that stuck in his mind and made him think that past ancestors were travellers or gypsies, i'm in the process of creating my dads family tree and when I got to his Grandma I got stuck, I can't find any info or her name on census's or anything. obviously if they were gypsies they won't be on census's but i'm really stuck and need some help on this (if it's possible) Girlie electrics - GRO records? Sorry, i've only just started doing the family tree so i'm very new to it and haven't learnt all the terms. I'm using family tree maker and ancestry.co.uk when I put her name in it doesn't find any hints about her and I have her marriage certificate therefore her maiden name, dates of marriage and where, also where and when she died as we have the death cert also but that's all. We don't have her birth certificate. Oh, plus I think she was born in Wales, I live in Leeds as did the family she married in to. Wow, thanks Rob G, she actually was a Burton. Thanks everybody else too. this will be a massive help. will prob contact some of you soon if thats possible.

Do Genealogists get paid well? I have become very interested in genealogy after tracing my family tree back to the year 1345. and found I was in blood relation to James Dean, Jackie "O", Judy Garland, Jesse James and a few others. I started taking some workshops. I want to know if it is worth becoming certified, will I make a decent income or is it a waste of time? What Do genealogists usually make for building someones tree or tracing an ancestor?

Would changing the Genealogy to Genealogy/Ancestors help clarify the confusion? Or any other suggestions to clarify the meaning of Genealogy. There are so many questions under this category that pertain to genes or related subjects that doesn't have anything to do with tracing your family tree. I have sent suggestions to Yahoo! Answers twice in the past. But, I guess one persons opinion is not enough to change something. Thanks for any suggestions and feedback!

Connecting the dots on the Casteen/Castine family tree.? My father has been fascinated with genealogy for as long as I can remember and recently his passion for family history has rubbed off on me. He and a few other family members have done an amazing job of finding grave stones, census records, birth/death certificates and other documents having to do with our family. From what I can tell the 1st of our ancestors to come over from Europe was a French Baron by the name and title of Jean Vincent D’abbadie, Baron St.-Castin. We can trace our family back to the 1700's through documentation,in the form of a will and testament, but there is an 80ish year gap from the Baron to the will in which our family jumped from Main (in the town of Castine) to VA and NC. In the records we have the family name changes from Castine to Casteen somewhere around the Civil War. The Baron had between 5-15 children, depending on web page I visit, and I am trying to find which one so I can start my way down the line. I know it was one of his sons because of the retention of the family name but past that I am lost. I am guessing I only have 3 or 4 generations to find, which is frustrating because I am so close and yet I am at a dead end. Dose any one have any information on this family or know where I could look to find some, short of taking a trip to New England?
Tell me the story of your ancestors that has been passed down.? I want to hear stories of Grandparents coming to the U.S. Or stories of you tracing your family tree, and what you have found from tracing your roots. For example, famous people, not from now, but those who helped to build the U.S.

How do I trace my ancestors in Mexico? My great-grandmother came to the U.S. from Mexico (legally for you trolls) from around Ciudad Victoria/Monterrey with my grandmother (age 13) over 50 years ago. My great-grandmother refused to tell my grandmother who her father was or even his name. She took it to her grave. My great-grandmother married an American after she got here, and so did my grandmother. I know almost nothing about my family in Mexico. My grandmother still speaks to some of her cousins, but she keeps her family there and her family here separate. I'm not concerned so much with family secrets as much as just connecting some dots, getting as much of my family tree as possible. Where would I even start? The last names I have are Morales and Rodriguez, which are pretty much the same as "Smith" and "Jones" I have no idea where to begin.
Why are some people proud that they are 100% English and have no other culture in their family history? A lot of people say that they are proud you can trace their family history and see that their family have been in England for 1000's of years and that they are proud of this fact, but I find this a bit boring and would like to have more of a melting pot family history with ancestors from different countries and cultures. My mum is doing my family tree and has so far traced back to the 1570's and discovered that all my ancestors where English Protestants and lived in the same town in Devon and although I am proud to be English I do find my family's history a bit boring.
Where may I find details of the history/lineage of German Barons, specifically that of the Von Sheliers? I am trying to trace back my family tree, and have some sketchy details of one of my ancestors coming from the family of Baron Von Shelier, but was later stripped of his title (somewhere around 1800) for marrying a 'commoner'. I have failed to find any information about this, and am looking for some help or for someone to point me in the right direction to find out more!
Would I have any Royal title in my name? I was able to trace my family tree to the Royalty (Kings) of Scotland, France, and England. can your blood type detect which part of the world your ancestors probably originated from? For example, my blood type is A+ - I read on Wikipedia that the UK and the Americas most common blood type is O. A+ is usually most commonly found in Europe - so does that mean that if i trace back far enough in my family tree i could have some European family members? Sorry if the question comes across as a little uneducated - just curious.Thanks. x

African Americans: How far back can you go in your family tree? My father is African American with some Afro-Caribbean mixed in and we're trying to trace his roots. On my grandmother's side, we can go back go Georgia in the 1850's but on my grandfather's side we can only go back to Mississippi in the 1890's. Tracing African American genealogy can be challenging because of slavery, admixture, etc. Do you have any advice on how I might be able to learn more about my ancestors? Serious responses only, please. Responses from all posters are of course welcome as long as they relate to the topic. Thanks.
Looking for an ancestor who lived from 1450-1480 in England. Can anyone help? I've traced my family tree back to William Ball who lived from 1450-1480. He is listed as a Lord Mayor, and was supposedly the Lord of Barkham Manor. I can find no information as to his parents. I do know that he had a son named Robert who was born around 1473 and died around 1543. Thanks, wendy c. This is the first time I've heard of a name given to William's parents.
What is a good site for tracing ancestors? I found an old Bible with entries for births and deaths dating from 1802 while cleaning out my Grandfather's house. I would love to get a good family tree going off of the names i found. Ok Wendy, good idea. Here is one of the more legible entries. William Henry Dickson born in Iowa, 1842. Phebe Elvira Vail, born in Crofford(not sure crofford is spelled right as there are some spelling mistakes i have noticed) County, Penn, 1836. William H Dickson married to Phebe E Vail on June 28th 1863 in Monroe County, town of Portland, Wisconsin. Children of William and Phebe, Hattie born september 20th 1865, Almira born April 5 1867, Another child was born September 18th 1869 but i cannot read the name. Phebe had a twin brother i think as another entry mentions Phebe and Wallace being born Jan 5th 1836. Phebe also has an older brother named William Vail born in 1828 in Canada. There are more entries if you are interested. Thanks again. PS, i do know that this is a family bible on my Grandmothers side. Sadly she has passed on so i cannot ask about any of the names.
