what the best free, tracing family tree websites,?
Public Comments
- There are many websites. Cyndi's list gives a multitide of them. A word of Caution. Do not take as fact everything you see in family trees on any website, free or paid. The information is submitted by folks like you and me. Most is not documented. You might see different information on the same person and then you will see over and over the same information on the same person without documentation. This unfortunatley means people are copying without verifying. There are errors in family trees on the internet. Check your local library and find out what all they have. They might have a subscription to Ancestry.Com you can use. Ancestry.Com has lots of records and is obtaining more all the time. Call your nearest Latter Day Saints(Mormon) Church and find out if they have a Family History Center. They have records on people all over the world, not just Mormons. In Salt Lake City they have the world's largest genealogical collection. Their Family History Center can order microfilm for you to view at a nominal cost. They are very nice and helpful. They don't bring up their religion. I have never had them to send one of their missionaries by to ring my doorbell and I have never heard that this has happened to anyone else that has used their resources. Don't expect to find a website and BINGO you have your family tree. You might find some of your family lines but it must be verified. The information in family trees must be viewed as clues as where to get the documentation. Good Luck!
- Ancestry.com has some Free information, but what most people do not know is you can use the paid area for FREE when you go to your local LDS Family History Library and use their computers as they are associated. Also: WorldConnect.com Family Search.org RootsWeb.com There are many more but these are a good place to start.

- At least sign up for ancestry.com, it provides a great program to put information together. Most likely after searching for a bit you'll want to pay to get a lot of information. I saw it before but yes, be careful about things without documentation (even though even that could be the result of a lie etc)
