- Hey Doofuss, I listed a bunch of sites below. LDS is free. Ellis Island is free but you have to register. Genealogy and Ancestry .coms are not always free. The soldiers and Sailors is free. Some of the government sites are free. The best sites for free for YOU will be found if you Type: <a family name> FAMILY in the Yahoo Search. This will bring up anyone else that is researching your same ancestors, in forums, etc. The DNA sites can help - but if you participate it is usually around a hundred bucks. Hook up with people that have similar family names, that is really the best.
- www.rootsweb.com There is also a very informative genealogy web site Cyndi's List that has many links, but you kind of have to know specifics to do searches in it. Be careful of LDS (Later Day Saints) generated trees. I have nothing against the religion but I believe that the church records family genealogy (even non-members) and the generation of these trees are not always based on facts. I have found many, many errors in my family trees using LDS trees. Do visit the site though, just make sure the source is documented and start from there.
- About our Free Web Courses Independent Study now offers free courses in different areas of study. These areas include Family History, Family Life, and Religious Scripture Study, such as the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants. Use these courses as a starting point for your personal studies or just to add insight to an area of interest. These courses are not for credit. http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/courses/freecourses.cfm I’ve checked it out and it is free..!!! Good luck. Kev, Liverpool, England.
