  1. Have you typed in your father's name to see if anyone has a web site with the Tree on it? Just type "Smith family - Weston super Mare" or whatever his name and location is. You could strike lucky; my father's maternal line is there. Ancestry.co usually offers 2 weeks free trial - make sure you know exactly what you want to know - make a long list - so that you don't waste any of the free time. www.myfamily.com www.familysearch.org/ www.freebmd.rootsweb.com You could try Genes Reunited which is a cheap site, or Lost Cousins. Check out www.Cyndislist.com for sites.
  2. If your father isn't deceased, you may not get anywhere. If he is living and cognizant, you should probably start by having him tell you everything he remembers about his life, parents and relatives. Then, armed with that information, (and possibly finding a family genealogist), using the tools and web sites mentioned by the other answerer will help you get there. But, do not be surprised if you reach a dead end, especially if the name changed somewhere along the line.
  3. My father's name was William john Cole, grandfather's name was William Cole of Battersea London and Fulham London
