Family tree/ ansestory free online website?

i have some stupid S.S. project for school and i need to trace back my family as far as i can whats the best free online way to find

1. Some websites have free trials and/or free information that you can use. That's what I did for my son's project years ago. 2. I assign this type project for my Gifted/Talented students [5th grade] and recommend they first talk [with a recorder] to grandparents, aunts and uncles and, of course parents, to get the beginning information. Then I send them to FamilySearch.org or to Rootsweb. Good luck and I hope this "genealogy bug" bites you and you continue to record family data as well as stories.
