  1. I don't know of a background check website but I can help you on a free family tree website. You can look on familysearch.org right away. Just be sure to check out any of the information you find because online sites are not always accurate. It is best to get the clues first and then investigate them. Next get a library card with a pin number and your library probably has at least 2 free sites in their database. One is AncestryPlus that you use at the library and the other is HeritageQuest. If you are just starting in genealogy check out Cyndislist.com for tons of genealogy links! Have fun!
  2. There are several free sites to search for ancestors. But let's start with a free family tree website. One that I have used is www.tribalpages.com You can choose to buy a site or use the free one. The free one works just fine. You can put your information into this tree. If you want to maintain one on your home computer, download a good free one, Personal Ancestry from www.familysearch.com You can upload the .ged files you create in Personal Ancestry to your tribalpages site. Easy. Now, to look up free information. Here are some sites: www.rootsweb.com , www.tribalpages.com, www.myheritage.com another valuable site is www.cyndislist.com , www.findagrave.com, www.interment.com Some of these sites do have a part that you can pay a fee for using but most of these are free. Some of these programs have the Social Security Master Death index on them which is another valuable tool in your search. If you are looking for ancestors in the UK, go to www.freeBMD.org, www.freecen.org.uk and www.freereg.org.uk A nice site is www.usgenweb.org This is the portal to all the states. You can find a lot of info here. And for when you are stumped, try www.raogk.org This is a volunteer site and someone may be able to help you. Again, it handles inquieries for both United States and other countries. You can access www.ancestry.com from your public library for free. It's called Ancestry Plus. These are some starting places that have been of use to me. As you explore these sites, you will find other free sites as there are many of them out there. Good luck and happy hunting.
