How can i find my families Genealogy (Dunlap)...?
Well actually i'm looking to find my families Genealogy which has been very difficult considering my mother was adopted at birth..and well..all she knows of her mother is her mothers real name thanks to a birth certificate (by the way my mother was born in Salzburg Austria). My father too was adopted when he was younger (he is from Cleveland, Ohio) however he knew his fathers last name was Deener (he is from Cleveland, Ohio). Once he got adopted his last name Changed to Dunlap. So considering Dunlap is my adoptive last name... i'm curious about finding my true heritage. Considering i am of mixed race i'm interested in finding out what it is i'm exactly mixed with. My mother is From Salzburg Austria, her last name is Löcker

- UK answer I found this for you. Surname: Dunlap This is a famous Scottish surname, which derives from a place near Cunningham, in Ayrshire. The original meaning was the fort (dun) at a muddy place (Lapach) from the olde pre 10th century gaelic, however it could not have been so unpleasant a spot as the original family have remained in the district since the 13th century. The name was pronounced locally as Dulap or Delap, and occasionally spelt that way as well, an example being Neel Fitz Robert de Dullope in 1296, in fact this record is a confusion of spellings in many ways. It translates as Neil, the son of (Fitz) Robert of Dunlop, who in that year rendered homage to the Scottish revolutionary government. Later in the same year he is recorded as Nel de Dunlopp, when he appeared as a witness on an inquest into the ownership of lands in Berwick. He was probably the original holder of the ancient coat of arms granted to Dunlop c1300 a.d. this being a red two headed eagle displayed, on a (silver) white field. The name is today very popular in the America and Canada, although the spelling form has almost reverted to the original dialectal of the middle ages being found usually as Dalape, Dunlap or Dunlape. Early examples of the recordings include Constantine Dunlop of that Ilk in the Buccleuch Manuscripts of 1496, and William Dunlop the Elder, who it is recorded having emigrated to California in 1680, before returning to Scotland to become Principal of Glasgow University in 1690. He died in 1700 at the age of only fifty one. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Dom Gullelmus de Dunlop, which was dated 1260, a charter witness at the town of Irvine, Scotland, during the reign of King Alexander 111 of Scotland 1249 - 1286. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
- Deener Name Meaning and History Probably an Americanized spelling of German Diener. Diener Name Meaning and History 1. occupational name for a council official, Middle High German dienære. In larger centers of population, the term was also used to denote a representative of the local tradespeople. 2. from a reduced form of the Germanic personal name Degenher, a compound of Old High German degan ‘warrior’, ‘vassal’ + her ‘noble’, ‘esteemed’. You didn't mention your mother's mother's last name, but you could edit your question and post it OR put it in another post to find out where it came from and what it means as well. Perhaps you could ask to see your parents' birth certificates, and look to see if there is more information about both their parents' names, and where your parents were born. There are many adoption sites available on the internet today, and depending on what the adoption privacy laws are in Cleveland and Salzburg, you may be able to post queries on those sites as well. If you're able to get to their parents' names and their parents' birth dates and locations, you are welcome to place additional posts in this forum for further help. I hope this gives you a few ideas on how to get started! Best of luck to you.
- A DNA test would really benefit you in this case. Taking the Y-DNA test would tell you for sure what your dad's last name should be and you would probably match others so you can work with them to determine which branch of that last name is your, which is probably the one listed below in Cleveland. You could take the combination T-DNA and MTDNA test to cover both your mother's and father's side.
