Is there a Geneology program that can track my various ethnicities? ?
Is there a Geneology program that can track my various ethnicities? I'm of Mexican heritage so its likely I'm multi-racial. I do not want to build a family tree, I just want to test my DNA. Does anyone recommend any programs?

- Genealogy programs are designed for building family tree(s) and tracking ancestors & descendants of those ancestors, which is another way of discovering your ethnic background, to some extent, but not 100%. For DNA testing, you need to seek the services of a reputable DNA lab.
- It's not likely to be as detailed as you might hope, but there are several genealogical DNA programs in place. They're really more geared towards Asia and Europe because of the migration tracking and not very detailed in Africa, Australia or the Americas. What they can tell you is that your matrilineal DNA has certain traits in common with people from a given region, like the Yucatan, and that you have genetic markers consistent with Central America. But they can't tell you that your 7th great grandfather was from Peru or that your 5th great grandfather was from Texas. It's decidedly vague on indigenous peoples.
- Please see the link below: http://www.dnatribes.com There are 3 types of DNA, Autosomal, Y & Mitochondrial. Most of your DNA is Autosomal which you get 50-50 from both parents coming down from all your ancestors. Y goes from father to son only. Mitochondrilal goes from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children. Y & Mirochiondrial are usually what are used in genealogy to help match people to other family trees. The companies that do the testing will advertise they will help you determine your "deep ancestral roots." However, it will only be on 2 specific lines. The reason they are used as they go back in a straight line virtually unchanged. Autosomal is more complicated. The number of people you descend from pyramids as your go back. If you get back to your 6xgreat grandparents, you are directly descended from 510 individuals. You get your Autosomal DNA from all 510. You get your Mitochondrial DNA from only 8 and if you are a male in addition, you would get your Y DNA from only 8. This leaves out 494 people DNA Tribes is the only genealaogy dna program, I believe, that is using Autosomal to trace down a your ethnicities. You can put that in your search engine and come up with the answer. Other testing companies were doing that type of testing but they feel it should be perfected more. Also, it will not give you specific nationalities, races or ethnicities but something like Northern European etc. The same DNA crosses national, racial and ethnic boundaries and people within the same national, racial or ethnic boundaries can have different DNA.
- To be quite honest, there may be some kind of test you can take to find this out but it is very expensive from what I hear. Do some online searching and possibly talk to your doctor about it.
