Heirlooms as engagement rings?

I just wondered, is there an etiquette on the source of family heirlooms as engagement rings? As in, should a ring come from a parent, or a grandparent, or are both acceptable (traditionally)?

Public Comments

  1. I believe both are acceptable traditionally I would just be sure the girl receiving it would appreciate the style of it.
  2. As long as the owner is willing to pass it along, it can come from the guy when proposing. It's acceptable to gain permisison from the current owner. The current owner should also realize that once it's gifted, it's gone. It's unacceptable to ask for it back after the ceremony. It is only acceptable to ask for the ring back if the couple do not go through with the wedding.
  3. the only etiquette is that the family to whom he piece belongs agrees to it
