Do ancestry/family tree websites work for people from other countries?

Do these website only trace your lineage back to the first ancestor who came to America? Is there a website that can get into other countries' databases too?

  1. Check Cyndi's List http://www.cyndislist.com/ There are hundreds of links to genealogy sites all over the world.
  2. Yes, genealogy is a universal study of human history based primarily upon the documentary evidence they left behind. Websites will generally try to deal with this evidence if even if it changes from one race, language, culture, or nation to another. Genealogy is a methodology; web sites are merely used to ease the collection of data that will then be evaluated though genealogical techniques. These techniques are universal, but the tricks are many, and the data gleaned can vary greatly. This data and documentation can become very scarce at times and places. Some web sites specialize in more obscure data links . You can find many of them by checking out http://www.cyndislist.com
  3. It depends where your ancestors came from. findmypast.com has mostly UK records including parish records, census and also passenger lists leaving the UK and some military records. ancestry.com has US, UK and European records of all kinds. Both these sites require a subscription to view records. For other countries cyndyslist (http://www.cyndislist.com/) has many links to genealogy sites all over the world.
