Advice on how to do a family tree please? Using the surnames Julian and Alderdice?

The Julian surname is from my mum's side, it was her dads surname. Her dad being Samuel Julian from St.Austell in Cornwall. He married my mum's, mum - Christine Hall. The Alderdice surname is on my dad's side, his dad being James Alderdice and mother being Helen McGarrity. From Edinburgh. Any useful tips/advice on doing a family tree would be very much appreciated thanks.
