Any good resources for tracing German ancestors?

I am trying to trace my family tree back further than what I already have...but I am getting stuck when it comes to tracing my family back over to Germany. Anyone know how to trace family from the 1800s and beyond/ find German records?

1. I have A LOT of German relatives on both sides of my family tree. Many I found thru "smart matches" on a family tree I set up on my heritage.com.
