I need to make a free family tree website....?
Hi! I need a website that's free, that I can make a family tree on. I need to be able to go back at least 8 generations, but more would be great, and I need it to be able to print it when I'm done. Any thing would help, but I really don't want to pay for anything. Thanks!

- Most of us keep our data on our PC. What isn't on the net can't be hacked, usually. The Mormons, http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp will give you PAF for free. It will go back 80 generations at least and let you print them. Researching your tree is another problem. Every once in a while someone stumbles across a tree their cousin, grandmother, etc. published on the web. They show it off, and high schoolers get the idea that EVERYONE can just type in their name and find their family tree. They can't. Getting back 8 generations would take you several years of research, 2 - 3 hours a night, 2 - 3 nights a week. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp and http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi are the two biggest free sites on the web. They are about 80% accurate. The false ones don't always show. (You can look for white people born in Ohio prior to 1783, or in the USA prior to 1621 to see some glaring boo-boos. (1607 if in Virginia). the rest are usually children with the wrong parents, men with the wrong wife, and so forth; they look reasonable. You might find one of your great grand parents there. 8 generations is about 240 years, or 1769. Before 1850, in the USA, you will be relying on land records, wills, church records, family Bibles, county histories, and so forth. It is tougher than 1850 - 1930, when you have the census.
