- Heirlooms are things of family value - grandmas handmaid quilt, grandpas carved mallard, not just things of financial value - tho' those are nice too. My mother knew she was dying and trimmed her possessions down to minimal. She asked me if I wanted her sterling flatware. It was very valuable, but more than that, it was the holidays we had when I was a child when it was used. We had a huge table set with fine china and the sterling - and always invited a military man (or 2-3) who was far from home and family. THAT is what meant so much to me, not the monetary value. And When I had holiday meals and used it, the meal was even richer for the memories.
- Great grandmothers wedding silver. passed to daughter.
- of course not!, I have passed down to my son, my pocket watch collection, my train collection, as well as Psoriasis, to my daughter!.
- Wow! :) The items are as varied as the families they belong to, I think. Anything and everything from things worth money to things with only sentimental value. I don't think passing down family treasures is a thing of the past. In today's economy it may be less common . Ya gotta have a surviving family first before there's anyone to pass heirlooms on to. :D
- Ceramic or glassware, silver, jewelry, old coins, pocket-watches, and perhaps an antique doll or other play item. I have a small monkey carved from a peach seed that my great-uncle made, he and my grandfather used to save the peach seeds and whittle them out, took a steady hand and small tools to get the seed kernel out and carve it.
- It seems so to me. I have many treasures, furniture, some paintings and other pictures. I was so disappointed to learn that my children did not hold many of the things in regard, even tho they knew their grandma well and knew the history of some of the things.
- people still do it I`m sure... Grandfather clocks
- Well, I have a chair from the early 1700s brought here from France by the first family to settle here, and one that is a pioneer chair which was handmade. I have a French bow pin which was my mother's and a picture of my grandmother and grandfather in a handmade frame, a handmade pin which belonged to my grandmother, and it is hand-engraved with a "Q" for Quinton which was her maiden name.
- Photos, jewelry, dishes. I have my great grandmother's headpiece she wore at her wedding in the 1880s.
- We don't have very many physical possessions that have been passed down, but we do have treasures. Luckily, someone took the time to write down our family history stories and that makes our ancestors so real to us instead of just names on a page. We have a great grandmothers story of crossing the the plains in a wagon, we have letters from a civil war soldier to his wife and another great grandmother related the stories she heard from her own great grandfather. The stories are amazing lessons in what they went through so we could be where we are today.
