how do you get a REAL family tree TREE and not a family tree CHART?

I need a family tree for school, but it can't be a pedigree chart. So I Google family tree and all I get is pedigree charts, so I'm stuck.

1. If someone in your family has not been working on you genealogy for some time, I don't see how one can do it over night?
