- I have my fathers medals from WWII and a handbag and ring that belonged to my grandmother, problem is no one to pass them on to.
- I know this is going to sound insane but I have the set of keys that my grandmother had. Now these are old as the one opened up gas lock that they used yrs ago but because they have my gramma's initial on them and because they were the last thing she had in her possession, I refuse to throw them out.
- What a wonderful question!!I Genealogy isn't just about our connnectedness, it's also about the material things that survive the test of time and connect us to those relatives who are so special to our family history. I, too have my dad's WW11 medals, enlistment papers, service records, death record and photos of his Verteran's headstone. As well as the photos of as many relative's headstones as I have been able to find. Growing up, going to my greatgrandmother's house and my grandmother's as well as my aunt's and great aunt's, I never realized that the many lovely things they had--so many that were "handed down" to them from so many years ago, would end up being in my home. I treasure the many pieces, including letters and photos that I am the custodian of and the fact that they have survived all of these years. My children and certain cousins will be the next caretakers. China, crystal, sterling silver, furniture and other types of historic home furnishings seem to be such a burden for some families and are thought by some to be only material things, but they are a part of my family's physical history and a lasting reminder of how our ancestors lived so many years ago.
- I have my great-grandmother's rocker that traveled from Virginia to Texas, probably around 1895, in the back of a covered wagon; it made it from Texas to Washington state with me in the back of a moving van over the Rockies in 2005!
- I have a small writing desk that followed my family from Scotland to the Dakotas. I'm like 'Benthebus' no one to pass it on to. RScott
