I want to take a cutting of my heirloom lilac before I sell my house. What is the best way to do this?

My lilac has already bloomed and is in full leaf.

  1. A popular way to grow new bushes is to take small shoots from an existing plant. Select shoots which are one to two feet tall. Look for good root systems. Dig deeply to extract as much of the root as possible. The main root will be attached to the mother plant. Use clippers to cut it from the main bush. Plant the new shoot in the location you have selected. Add compost to the soil before planting. Plant three to five shoots in each area. Water thoroughly. Like all transplants, the survival rate is higher if transplanted in cooler weather. Keep the soil around your transplant moist, but not water-logged.
  2. Separate a part of it including the root
  3. You might get some large pots and plant some. Good soil and just stick them in the pots, cuttings about 8 to 10 inches but don't to old stems. Keep them moist don't let them dry out. This work for my brother Lilac's root in just dirt. in the early spring you can just cut them and stick them in the ground. Here is an article too: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf000915.tip.html
