Family records advice.?

I need advice please on who to contact, the Family Records Centre or the National Archives in the UK., with regard to the 1901 census. Louisa Marsh wed William Baker in Brighton Sept. 1894. They had 2 daughters, Louisa born Nov. 23rd 1897. (the other one, dont know her name). William died in Brighton in 1899. I have tried spelling the name all different ways, Backer, Bakor, Bakerr. Bacor, the list goes on all to no avail. Obviously it is some transcript error.I have tried Genes Reunited and 1901 Census On Line. Thank you.

  1. What exactly are you looking for? If William died in 1899 you aren't going to find him in the 1901 census. Are you looking for the spouse or children? Explain more what you need help with.
  2. When was Louisa senior born? I've found several Louisa Bakers in their 20s and 30s in the 1901 Brighton census. It's possible that the children weren't living with her at the time - it was not uncommon for poor families (particularly where the mother was widowed) to farm children out to grandparents or other relatives for a year or so when times were tough. Have you eliminated that possibility? I've found Louisa Bakers born c1897 in Rotherfield, Hastings and Crowborough respectively, all of which are not THAT far from Brighton. Have you eliminated them? Also, it's possible that the forename, not the surname, was mistranscribed - for ages I couldn't find my great-grandmother in the 1901 census. I eventually discovered that Melinda E. had been transcribed as Mylinda C! Plus sometimes people who were commonly known by a diminutive, nickname or middle name are recorded by different names in different documents (e.g. I have a great-great-uncle who is Arthur in his baptismal record but John in most censuses, and an ancestor who was baptised and married as Susannah but buried as Susan). So it could be the Christian name that is causing you grief. I did a 1901 census search of Louisas born in Brighton 1896-8 and couldn't find anything remotely like "Baker", which suggests to me that either the forename's wrong, or she died, or she wasn't born in Brghton, or she's been missed out all together. If you want to contact someone, 1901 censusonline has a contact facility: http://www.1901censusonline.com/main.asp?wci=general_feedback but I'm not sure how much assistance they will be - they don't normally offer an individual service. Another possibility is to post a message under Sussex Look-Up requests at Rootschat - a UK free family history site where people will often help other genealogists. You're more likely to get someone who knows Brighton on that site. http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,265.0.html Good luck.
  3. Try here and do a soundex search just might help. Good luck and good hunting
