how do I turn my family tree saved files from family tree maker to a gedcom file?

My family tree maker has asked me after every 100 people I add to my family tree if I want to share my tree online. I want to add a family tree to rootsweb but I don't know how to make a GEDCOM file to upload it. Along the same lines I want to be able to import the information in the GEDCOM files I have downloaded already to add to my family tree instead of copying and pasting all the information one line at a time from different sites. Can I do this with Family Tree Maker 2006, if so how? After taking a chance and trying something last night, hoping not to lose my whole family tree in the process. I was able to open downloaded GEDCOM files in family tree maker, but it still can't figure out how to add it to what I already have instead of having to do it one by one.

1. Use the "export" function and under "file type" pick GEDcom
2. Click on File, select Export File, then Entire File, and go from there. Make sure the file ends in .ged.
