  1. Go to Genes reunited. You can put your family tree on for free and it will till you if memebers of your tree match anyone elses. Other people can contact you without you paying but if you really want to delve there is a fee of £9.95 for 6 months for you to contact others. I think its a great site and I have traced my family back as far as the 1700's just on free membership xxxx

  3. Nothing in genealogy is truly free. There are certain sites that are better than others, but that really depends what you want to find out. It also depends exactly where in the world you are and where in the world you are researching. Dozens of people post similiar questions every week, and most of them seem to have been deluded by the BBCs "Who Do You Think You Are?" program into thinking that all you have to do is walk into a library or record office and be presented with your family tree on a plate. It just doesn't work like that - unless you have some distant Great Aunt who has already done your tree and put it online somewhere like rootsweb or tribalpages, in which case you'll get back the the 16th or 17thC almost instantly. If not, then you'll have to put in the legwork, and this is where most people give up. They just don't have the time to devote to the hobby or don't want to spend the money. It's not hard, but it does require plenty of reading before trying to dive right in there. The best advice is always to start with yourself and work backwards methodically and make use of older family relatives like aunts and grandparents whilst they are still alive. In the UK at least, your hardest task will be getting back to the time of the 1901 census and breaking the barrier. Once you've got that far getting back to the early 1800s and earlier is a breeze. The only problem with the 20th century is the dreaded Data Protection Act, which makes it quite difficult to find out anything at all from this period. Once you start making headway with your research, you will need to pay for a subcription to Ancestry (whether the UK or US versions), but that's not to say that free sites like Familysearch.org, genuki.org, FreeCEN or FreeBMD don't have their uses. The best online list of genealogical sites by country and subject is at www.cyndislist.com.
